We spoke with Giovanni Giordano, Lead Developer at Yummy Media, who headed the "San Diego Gulls Scoreboard" application for the San Diego Gulls Hockey Team using Zinc v2.
TELL US A LITTLE ABOUT THE APPLICATION
The San Diego Gulls came to Yummy Media looking for a fun way to keep their hockey fans up to date about upcoming Gulls promotions. We decided on a desktop app shaped like a hockey scoreboard that could provide info and calls a 3D animated, accessorizable version of their mascot, Grinder. The browserless app would be easy to download, comes in rich media and includes timely news and fan polling popups. The Scoreboard is designed to:
- Entertain fans with an animated Grinder that can be accessorized with different jerseys and hockey sticks.
- Keep fans updated on news and upcoming events.
- Give ticket and scheduling info.
- Drive traffic to the Gulls main website.
- Provide a new way for sponsors to advertise online.
- Allow the Gulls to tailor messages and ads to targeted fans.
Fans can easily download the free Scoreboard from the main Gulls website. It’s safe, secure and simple to install. In return, the Gulls are able to profile fans, collect aggregate data, and build a closer relationship with them by increasing contact through more entertaining interactions. The Scoreboard is also an effective viral marketing tool with fans able to send it to friends.
WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO USE ZINC v2?
We create enhanced desktop applications (better known here at Yummy as “Dapps”) and we needed to run a rich media microsite within the 3D engine we were using for the mascot Grinder. That didn’t quite happen and we were pretty much stuck as far as getting the Scoreboard to run on a user’s desktop and interact with the 3D engine. We had hit a brick wall when at a local bookstore, I passed through the computer section and saw some stuff dealing with some keywords for our business: Desktop and transparent. As I rushed through the pages, I realized this was exactly what we needed to take our “Dapps” to another level!
HOW DID YOU FIND USING ZINC v2?
Zinc v2 was very easy to use with a ton of potential, my developers immediately starting coming up with ideas and applications. It was everything we were looking for and then some! It fit like a glove and allowed us to deliver (actually over deliver!) a standout application for the Gulls.
WHAT WAS THE MOST IMPORTANT ASPECT OF ZINC V2 FOR YOU?
The driving motto of Yummy Media is to think “outside the browser” and that’s exactly what Zinc v2 allowed us to do through its rich media platform. It’s got a load of features in one application that helped to deliver a standalone exe to the next level. The best feature for us (and our client) was the server communication and ability to send notifications to the user through the system tray.
DO YOU PLAN TO USE ZINC V2 IN FUTURE PROJECTS?
We can’t wait! Zinc v2 fits very well and compliments Yummy Media core applications. We plan to develop many applications using it to enhance our Dapps. This application is a true powerhouse and opens some doors for some creative applications in rich media. We’re currently in development on an enhanced Dapp and Zinc v2 will play an extremely enhancing role. Stay tuned for more Yummy Media stuff because we’re “coming to a desktop near you.”
